How to make your blog comments count

Blogging is fun and good for business. Blogs have been created for enjoyment and entertainment as well as for businesses for ecommerce purposes. Comments can make a big difference in the overall success of your blog so learning how to comment correctly is important.

In the early days of blogging, most comments were made innocently. Someone would leave a comment because they liked what they read. Or if they disagreed, they might want to begin a discussion by leaving a comment that welcomed other comments.

Those same reasons for commenting still apply, but now we have learned how commenting can have a positive or negative effect on your business.

When you leave a comment, often you are permitted to sign the comment and leave a link to your website. This creates the all important back link which helps with search engine optimization.

Site Owners Have the Leverage

Site owners, if they are on top of things, will understand the need to moderate the comments and only approve those that are of value and appropriate. If you are leaving comments then you should understand how to make yours count so it doesn’t get deleted by the moderator.

If you add a comment because you want back links to your site, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Everyone does it. But you want to provide value when you leave your comments. By doing so, you are giving value to the blog owner as well as yourself.

Read the post first. Don’t just find one and arbitrarily start writing “cool post”, or “good post”. You might mean it but spammers often do this and they haven’t even read the post. They just want a back link. If the blog owner suspects that this is what you are doing, kiss your spammy comment bye-bye!

Share your genuine thoughts about the post. If it helped you, let them know. Tell them how it helped. If you disagree with the post, there’s nothing wrong with a healthy discussion about things. Please remember your etiquette and be polite even when disagreeing.

Don’t Be a Copy and Paste Bum

Don’t write a post for comments and then copy and paste it on multiple sites. This is in poor taste, will be spotted as not being genuine and your comments go in the trash bin.

Add value to your own site by using your name as well as appropriate keywords in your blog comment and link to your site. Reread your comment before posting to make sure it reads well and makes sense. The owner of the blog is fully aware that people leave comments to get links for themselves too but they don’t want blatant advertising on your part. It will be construed as spam and deleted before it ever hits the page live! It becomes a pointless exercise and nobody wins. What goes around comes around.

If you do a good job with your commenting you may even develop relationships with the more popular relevant blogs. Subscribe to their comment feeds and post more comments over time. Once you are well known for commenting with respect and adding value, it will serve you well in the long run. Use these tips and make your comments count.
